Houston, TX is where Mark was born and spent the first 12 years of his life before moving to California. Mark attended Monte Vista High School in Danville, CA (graduating class of 2009) where he was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 15th round.
He chose to attend Stanford University instead of starting his professional career. After 3 years at Stanford, Mark was drafted again, this time by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the first round (8th overall). He declined the Pirates offer in favor of finishing school and competing one more year at Stanford.
The following draft, Mark was selected by the Houston Astros in the first round (1st overall), and signed a few weeks later in the summer of 2013.
